The Alliance for Rail views the federal government’s recently adopted climate protection program as a missed opportunity for the transportation transition. According to the transportation alliance, the environmental impact of rail is being massively underestimated.
To transform the sector in a sustainable and affordable way, relying solely on the Deutschlandticket is not enough; rather, there is a lack of concrete measures to tangibly shift traffic from the road to rail.
Lack of Focus in the Price Debate A central point of criticism from the Alliance is the current political focus on gasoline prices. Instead of merely pushing for quick discounts at the gas pump during election campaigns, the federal government must accelerate the expansion of bus and rail capacity. Only a broader range of options will create the necessary incentive to switch from private cars. To ensure this shift is possible for all segments of the population, the alliance also calls for a nationwide, uniform social ticket to supplement the standard fare.
Connectivity Instead of Focus on Fuel Prices In light of rising CO₂ emissions in the transportation sector—as evidenced by current data from the Federal Environment Agency—the Alliance for Rail is pushing for closer integration of transportation modes. Instead of fixating on fossil fuel prices, the federal government should promote electric mobility holistically. This applies to both freight and passenger transport.
A practical solution proposed by the alliance: equipping all Park-and-Ride facilities with electric charging stations. This would allow commuters to cover the first part of their journey electrically and then seamlessly switch to rail—a combination that makes mobility both climate-friendly and affordable.
