Since 11 October 2025, trains have been running again between Austria and Slovakia – fully electric for the first time. The commissioning of the modernised Marchegg East Railway marks an important step towards sustainable mobility in the region and on the main line. This will make the connection between Vienna and Bratislava faster, more comfortable and more environmentally friendly.

Following completion of the electrification work by ÖBB and modernisation on the Slovakian side, the gap across the March Bridge has now been closed. To mark the symbolic start, a maiden voyage from Bratislava to Marchegg took place on 6 October, with a Slovakian delegation led by Transport Minister Jozef Ráž being welcomed by representatives of ÖBB.

Since then, 38 local trains – 19 in each direction – have been running daily on the Marchegg East Railway between Vienna and Bratislava. With the timetable change in December, four Eurocity train pairs will be added, bringing the total number of daily connections to 46.

The line has been upgraded to double track, electrified over 37 kilometres and all stations have been modernised and made barrier-free. New Park & Ride and Bike & Ride facilities make it easier to switch to rail. The closure of all level crossings in Lower Austria also significantly increases traffic safety.

Advantages at a glance:

  • Shorter journey times between Vienna and Bratislava
  • Greater comfort thanks to modern, barrier-free vehicles
  • Improved stations with a high quality of stay
  • Greater safety thanks to the elimination of level crossings
  • Environmentally friendly operation with 100% green traction current

The electrical connection via the Marchegg Eastern Railway marks another milestone for climate-friendly, cross-border mobility on the Magistrale for Europe.
