Rail Sections

Plans and/or financing to upgrade or construct of the following sections of the Main Line have not yet been secured:

Strasbourg-Karlsruhe

Strasbourg-Kehl-Appenweier

Status quo:

Strasbourg-Rheinbrücke-Kehl in operation since 2010 (15 km, double-track, up to 160 km/h).

Expansion activities / Intended target state:

Speed increase Kehl – Appenweier to Vmax = 160 km/h, including new construction of single-track connecting curve Appenweier for overall double-track, level connection to the NBS Karlsruhe – Offenburg, Vmax = 180 km/h. Since 2018 in the priority demand of the Federal Transport Plan. Construction rights for the final planning approval section are expected in 2028.

Construction of the Rastatt Tunnel (tunnel length: 4,270 m, double-track, up to 250 km/h) secured, planned commissioning 2026, travel time gain approx. 5 minutes.
